Join the Friends of Mt. Tabor Park Weed Warriors on Saturday, May 26!

Meet at the Mt. Tabor Visitor Center!

Saturday, May 26 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Here’s a great opportunity for yogis to come together to serve the community and Mother Earth! The event is right next door to Mandala Yoga at Mt. Tabor Park.

The Friends of Mt. Tabor Park relies on the generous support of volunteers to keep the park safe, clean, and accessible to all. We will meet at 8:30 - 8:45 at the Mt. Tabor Visitor Center (near the amphitheater) to remove invasive plant species and restore native habitat to Mt. Tabor Park.

For those who are interested, we’ll all go out to lunch afterwards!

Volunteers of all ages are welcome to participate. However, any volunteer under 16 must attend with a parent or adult chaperone; and children under 8 must be in the company of an adult for the duration of the service project.

Yogi Bhajan Video and Seva Team Gathering

Karma Yoga is Coming!

Karma Yoga through seva (selfless service) is a key component of our yogic lifestyle. Yogi Bhajan spoke about some aspect of Seva/Karma Yoga in almost every class he taught. He encouraged students to focus on giving rather than getting, to live with an attitude of gratitude for all blessings and all challenges, to act as a forklift and uplift others in need, and to serve humanity with love.
Seva means doing a service, a service with no return. That is how grace gets multiplied,
when you are not seeking any return.
~
Yogi Bhajan 7/20/81

Organizational Gathering Saturday, February 17
4:00pm-6:30pm

Hardev & Gurucharan’s home -
7700 NE Alameda St 97213

Why you should be there:
  1. There is a need to help others here in Portland and you can make a difference
  2. Seva is a key element in our yogic lifestyle and we need to create a path for people to participate
  3. Focus on the first sutra: “Recognize the other person is you!” - this is a wonderful opportunity to manifest this in your life!
  4. When you serve others, you also serve give yourself an amazing gift - an attitude of gratitude and a big boost of love!!!!!!

Would you like to help organize, prepare and share a potluck meal with SIMRIT and her band on September 20? Simrit will be in Portland for a workshop at Mandala on Tuesday, Sep 19 and a concert at Alberta Rose Theater on Wednesday, Sep 20. If you you'd like to help with the meal on Sep 20, see below for details....
Picture
Arrive to Alberta Rose Theater at 6pm and share the meal with Simrit and the band.  You will also receive TWO free concert tickets for your support and seva.

Needed:  4 people to prepare 2 healthy, organic dishes that will feed 15 people a small-medium portion (specific dietary needs will be given to you).

1 person to bring drinks and desserts, and to also set the table and bring everything needed for the meal (plates, forks, spoons, napkins, cups, serving spoons) as well as flowers and perhaps a couple of table cloths. This person will also take responsibility that the space is left clean afterwards.

Support Simrit and her band, and be a part of a warm Portland welcome to these amazing artists.  Share a meal with them and enjoy the opportunity to visit with them.

If you'd like to help, please email Sirgun Kaur (Signa Cheney) at [email protected].  Thank you!

Thank you all so much!  Please be sure to read the notes on their Take Them a Meal page... here is an excerpt:

"From a Kundalini tradition as well as in Ayurveda and many other traditions, the 40 days after birth are considered a time of bonding, and recovery. The mother should be resting and creating a good relationship with her new born child. This is why we ask for your participation in bringing the family a meal. It is important that the family can have private, quiet time to get used to this big change in their lives. As well as recover from the delivery."

Wishing this new being and his parents all the blessings of health and happiness!!

...than devotional SERVICE

PictureArt by Gurukirn Kaur Khalsa
Seva means selfless service. One of the pillars of Sikh Dharma, it's also related to karma yoga. Seva cultivates Bhakti Yoga, the heart of the devotee and union through complete sublimation into the object of devotion. It's difficult to maintain a big ego when you're focused continually on serving others. Yogi Bhajan speaks often about seva, in both Gurdwara lectures and general yoga classes. (Alternate spelling: Sewa).

...than creating MIRACLES

Picture

Every Fall we have the blessing of celebrating Guru Ram Das' birthday. Known as the Lord of Miracles, Guru Ram Das was the 4th Sikh Guru and embodied humility, service, and deep devotion. Guru Ram Das held a special place in Yogi Bhajan's heart. Our community looks to Guru Ram Das for guidance, healing, and protection. Yogi Bhajan gave us a special sadhana to do in celebration of Guru Ram Das's birthday.

September 28 - October 8: For 11 days prior to his birthday we chant the shabad Dhan Dhan Ram Das Guru for 31 minutes. This is the Shabad of Miracles. We do this together at each others homes at 7pm. See the CALENDAR to find out where to go each night! If you can't make it, chant on your own when you can!

Sunday, October 9: This is the day we celebrate Guru Ram Das Ji's birth, when we have a special sadhana of chanting Dhan Dhan Ram Das Guru for 2 ½ hours in the Amrit Vela. We need people to hold space and lead the chanting (see below)!

Yogi Bhajan has described this occasion as a powerful time for the fulfillment of prayers and a time of great blessing. One idea is to write your prayers down and have a place a special box or container that everyone can add to as the 11 days progress. Then, after the birthday sadhana, have a ceremony and burn the prayers, sending them out to the Infinite. Allow the divine healing energy of Guru Ram Das to take care of you.

THREE SEVA OPPORTUNITIES:
1) Host on of the eleven evenings of chanting. This is a huge blessing! The beautiful energy created in your home or studio is so sweet. At the time of this post we are still in need of hosts on
Mon, Oct 3
Wed, Oct 5
Thu, Oct 6
Fri, Oct 7
Sat, Oct 8
Double check by going to the calendar and hovering or clicking on the event "
Eleven Evenings: Celebrate Guru Ram Das' birthday" for any date you are interested in - either you will see a host's name and address or you will see "Needs a host".

Do you need to know the mantra to host?
NO! It would be great if you did of course, but there are tons of fantastic recordings out there. Just check Spirit Voyage or Sikhnet :) Here are the words and translation.

What if my place is super small?
No worries! We'll be cozy :) and as much as we'd love it if more people showed up, usually it's only a small handful.

What's the time commitment?
Be ready to go at 7pm and expect people to leave around 8pm. Usually we tune in and get started around 7:10 :)

How do I sign up? So glad you asked!

email Guru Surya with the following:
~your name as you would like it listed
~your address
~best phone number if someone is coming and gets lost/is running late
~anything else someone should know (any tricks to finding the right door, where to park, if you have pets...)!!
You will be responsible for welcoming people, tuning in and providing the mantra to chant along with (usually a recording but live is awesome too!)

2) Help lead the special sadhana on Sunday, October 9. In the past we have played a recording and then we have 5 different people hold the space for a half an hour. This will be held at Awakenings Wellness Center.

3) Show up! Yes, your presence is powerful so please come to as many chanting events as you can - this will amplify the effect for you and for all those there.

Wahe Guru!
Happy Autumn!
See you soon!

Looking for a few good yogis

This community is in need of some folks that can lend some consistent support. Specifically, at this time we are looking for...

Facebook updater
Blogger
Website updater
Panj members

Training is provided! Please visit our new SEVA (selfless service) page to learn more about these opportunities!

Yogathon!

Yogathon is Living Yoga's annual yoga community fundraiser. We have set up a Portland Kundalini fundraising team for the Living Yoga Yogathon! It's really easy to join and fund raise! When you register, please join the team "I LOVE PDX KUNDALINIS!"

The cost to join is $20 - that money and all subsequent funds raised all help run and advance Living Yoga efforts to bring yoga to those recovering from addiction or in prison.
.
We really hope our team can make a splash - and work toward being the winning team. We would love to see Kundalini Yoga more widespread and KNOWN in Portland. This is a great way to do it.

Please consider showing your commitment to your practice by raising funds for an organization that teaches over 1200 classes of yoga a year in prisons and addiction rehabilitation facilities.

Bylaws to be updated

The Panj will be voting on updating the bylaws at the next meeting (April 13). You can read the current bylaws here. The change that is under consideration is in ARTICLE IV – MEMBERSHIP. The proposed changes are here.

Basically, at the last meeting (read the minutes of the March 9 meeting here) a discussion began to in
clude teachers who are paying dues to kypdx and those doing seva as voting members. Voting members can elect Panj members. Part of upholding the bylaws is to let the community know that a change to the bylaws has been proposed. Let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

A reminder to teachers

Teachers who are supporting kypdx with monthly or yearly dues, please remember that your classes or workshops can be in this blog and the calendar!

Submit your item by emailing [email protected] with the subject line "CALENDAR ITEM", "NEWSLETTER ITEM", or "CALENDAR & NEWSLETTER ITEM".

Class time change? Let us know! We can't track everyone down but we do love our website to be accur
ate, so keep us in the loop. Thanks!
